PLayhouse Theatre Company

The Summer Theatre Institute gives first-year theatre students at Stephens the chance to produce, direct and act in community performances. During the fast-paced program, students learn essential theatrical skills.

All performances are free and open to the public. General seating. Performances are held in the Warehouse Theatre, 104 Willis Ave., with the exception of the June 23 performance, which will be held in the Macklanburg Playhouse, 104 Willis Ave.

2014 Season

A Dozen Rootabagas – a children’s theatre performance
7:30 p.m., May 23
Directed by Carol Estey
Our traditional Summer Theatre Institute show for young audiences will feature this delightful tale, adapted by professional actor/director/playwright Kip Niven (from the writings of famed author and poet, Carl Sandburg). Directed by Carol Estey, an actor/director/choreographer and a 30-year veteran of Broadway, national tours, regional theatre, and artistic director for dance at Stephens College.

Slap Schtick! – comedy meets combat
7:30 p.m., May 30
Directed/Choreographed by John Wilson
A comic look at what happens when a well-intentioned master class in fight choreography goes awry. Directed/choreographed by John Wilson, a professional director, actor, fight choreographer and teacher.
Ages 12 and up. Approx. 1 hr.

The Blessed Unrest Project – devised theatre magic    
7:30 p.m., June 6
Directed by Jessica Burr and Matt Opatrny
STI is privileged to offer this original, devised theatre performance piece. The performance will be developed by the husband and wife team of Matt Opatrny and Jessica Burr of the New York City-based acting company Blessed Unrest, winners of the prestigious 2011 Lucille Lortel Award. Get ready for an evening of thrilling, artist-driven magic!

Women of the West – true tales of frontier women   
7:30 p.m., June 13
Adapted and directed by Lamby Hedge

Using authentic diaries and letters of the period, STI will make women of the frontier come alive once more. Expect a moving, powerful, and oft-times amusing evening of testimonials, confessions, harrowing exploits and shared secrets.
Ages 12 and up.  Approx. 1 hr.

A Grand Night for Show Music – a sparkling musical theatre revue
7:30 p.m., June 23
Directed by Rob Doyen, Musical Direction by Cheryl Nichols, and Choreographed by Millie Garvey
We cap our season with a joyous Broadway musical revue. Lots of singing! Lots of dancing! Lots of fabulous entertainment!—and we have a powerhouse team to bring it all together. A perfect send-off for an amazing season. This one will be standing room only! Come early to reserve your seats.
