Stephens Tennis Beats Central Christian College for First Win of SeasonMomentum carries over into Friday evening match as Stars defeat the Tigers, 7-2
SALINA, Kan. - The Stephens College tennis program grabbed its first team win of the spring on Friday (Feb. 21) against Central Christian College, taking down the team from McPherson, Kan., 7-2. With the victory, the Stars improved their overall record to 1-2 on the season.
To kickstart the evening, the Stars claimed two of three doubles matches. Both the No. 1 and No. 2 pairs won with ease and gave the team a 2-1 lead heading into singles competition. Senior Dina Kaissi and freshman Courtney Huels teamed up for an 8-0 win over the Tigers' top two individuals, while the duo of Chelsea Cross and Gracie Strawn defeated Stevie Ellis and Megan Carter (CCC) by a score of 8-2.
At No. 1 singles, Kaissi picked up her second win in a row and managed an 8-0 sweep of Tori McCord. Her doubles partner, Courtney Huels was the only other player to win 8-0.
Both Chelsea Cross and Gracie Strawn defeated their opponents, 8-2, while Stars' Dani Kelley edged Em Barnett of CCC, 8-6. She reached a milestone along the way earning her first career singles win at the collegiate level.
Rounding out the competition was junior Emily Mendoza, who was competitive at the No. 6 spot, but fell short in an 8-5 loss.
Stephens has a chance to come out of the weekend .500 with a win over McPherson College on Saturday afternoon. Tomorrow's tennis action is set to start at 2:45 p.m.
